Email Therapy

Email therapy is different to the other forms of therapy I offer because it is asynchronous - this means that communication takes place at different times between me and a client.  Email therapy is useful for people who have shift work or additional concerns regarding privacy or confidentiality.  Clients can write as many emails as they like between sessions and I will provide one substantive reply per session - the time and date of this reply will be scheduled just like a session in another modality.  Because of the flexibility in delivering Email therapy, I offer Email therapy at a lower rate.  This can make it more financially accessible if cost is a factor.

How do I access Email Therapy?

I use a service called Tutanota™ for Email Therapy - this is a free service with enhanced encryption which allows absolute privacy and confidentiality in communication.

To use Tutanota™ you will need to create an account, then:
  • Download an app for your phone or tablet
  • Visit the Tutanota website in your web browser

You can sign up and find links to download the apps you need by following this link.

Advantages of Email Therapy

  • Total flexibility: there are literally no barriers to when you can submit Email therapy.  If finding a block of time is difficult for you, take it one smaller message at a time.  There is no limit to the number of emails you can send.  In return, at the scheduled session, I will provide one substantive therapy reply.  Again, you can take your time in replying to this, whatever best suits you.

  • Different frequency: typically all therapies work best with weekly or fortnightly sessions.  Email therapy is different because it allows you to reach out to your therapist "between sessions".  Some clients prefer the regular opportunity to share their feelings, rather than one weekly session.

  • Ongoing support: sometimes after people have concluded a course of therapy they may wish to check in a few months later, so explore the difference in how they're feeling and perhaps even celebrate the changes they have made in their life.  Email therapy allows clients to schedule a session perhaps a few months in advance and still check in every now and then.

  • Confidence: people with low opinion of their self-image, or little body confidence may be nervous about being seen in a Video or Face to Face therapy session.  Similarly people with speech or hearing impairments may not want to, or be able to, access VoIP sessions.  Instant Messaging therapy allows clients to get real time empathic responses whilst helping the client build confidence in the therapeutic process
